The Importance of Stylists
Including a professional stylist on the photography team during interior photoshoots is an important addition to an interior photoshoot. Sometimes, designers feel as though there is no need for a stylist, and that they are able to style their projects themselves. Although this may be true in some cases, using a professional stylist ultimately heightens the work of the designer and gives a polished edge to the final photography.
Throughout this post, I have incorporated compositions from a few of my most trusted stylists that have helped to elevate my photography and the work of designers throughout my years of capturing interiors.
While designers know how important it is to capture their current work, I also am aware many designers are often so busy with clients that it’s difficult to find time to even do a photoshoot and to spend the time gathering the necessary props for a shoot. This is another area in which stylists are extremely helpful to the photo process, as they are able to do the prop shopping themselves, and usually have many contacts at local stores and showrooms that give them access to pieces that might not be as accessible. Although I always want the designer at the shoot to make sure the team is capturing all the spaces as they would like, the stylist is a tremendous help before, during and after the shoot and allows you to capture your work in a timely manner.
These professionals know what stylistic trends current magazine editors are looking to include in their publications, and therefore always bring a fresh look to the work.
They have also worked so closely with photographers throughout their careers that they understand how the camera captures a space almost as well as the photographer.
As a result, they know what elements will take the photography to a higher compositional level, and are able to piece together and arrange the props of a shot while I am focusing on the camera, photo composition, and technical aspects of the images. This is the sort of teamwork that results in the most captivating photographs.
Stylists help to create the final layer of a photograph: the icing on the cake. They have the ability to do as much or as little as clients desire in order to capture the emotion of the space that architects and designers have spent months, if not years, creating for their clients. Through the combined effort of both the stylist and the photographer, we are able to create the highest quality images of the space at its full photographic potential.
