Shoots of Christmas Past

Hello friends!

As we warmly welcome the onset of the winter season, our hearts are full with gratitude. We appreciate the abundance of moments that we've been fortunate enough to freeze in time through the lenses of our cameras in winters past. From glistening snowflakes to cozy gathering spots around crackling fireplaces, each shoot over the years has been unique and carried the essence of the season's magic.

Join us as we reminisce about some of the most memorable holiday shoots that have graced our portfolio in the past decade. We're looking back on four winter projects, showing snapshots from the work along with special behind-the-scenes moments.

Read on to celebrate this season's joy with us and see special photos of the people who made these dreamy winter shoots possible!

Oetgen Design for Southern Home

In December 2017, we had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with the incredibly talented John Oetgen of Oetgen Design for a winter shoot. The setting was his second home in Highlands, NC, and the timing couldn't have been more magical—snow had blanketed the landscape, turning it into a winter wonderland.

Our original plans had to be postponed briefly because of the challenges navigating the snowy mountain roads, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. When we finally captured the moments, the snow-kissed scenery provided the perfect backdrop for a festive Christmas shoot.

We brought the beauty of nature indoors, incorporating pinecones, florals, and the delightful company of their dogs. John's husband, the talented graphic designer John Lineweaver, treated us to delicious meals during our stay at their lovely home and helped with the beautiful styling. The warmth of their hospitality made the experience unforgettable. Kelly and I truly enjoyed our time, and if it hadn't been December, we would have gladly extended our stay. They not only welcomed us but wined and dined us, creating memories that still bring smiles to our faces.

Carson McElhenhey Landscape Architecture and Design

On another delightful December evening in 2017, I received an exciting call from Carson McElhenhey Landscape Architecture and Design that set the tone for a memorable adventure. The voice on the other end, filled with enthusiasm, asked, "Do you want to work tomorrow?!?!?" The catch was navigating the snowy conditions to reach the homes on the list. Undeterred, I eagerly accepted, especially since I was already familiar with two of the houses from previous shoots.

One of the homes belonged to friends, and as I captured the enchanting winter scenes, my friend piped in Christmas music through the poolside speakers—truly a magical touch!

After wrapping up the outdoor shots, I was graciously invited inside to warm up. The house was a festive haven, adorned with perfect Christmas decorations, including a flocked tree. After a bit of coaxing, they agreed to let me return to capture the interior before Christmas. On December 18, we added another shoot to our bustling schedules. Four moms giving up a precious day in the week before Christmas to make this shoot happen. The extra effort paid off when Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles picked up and featured the story in their December 2018 issue, making it a December to remember!

R. Higgins Interiors

Now, not all Christmas shoots happen in December. For this project, Ann Shipp, the ever-dedicated partner and co-owner at R. Higgins Interiors, along with her then-assistant Jillian Downham, embarked on a festive mission to bring Christmas to February in Blackberry Farm for Traditional Home magazine, and their efforts were nothing short of magical!

While the homeowners already had a "permanent" tree adorned with a stunning collection of Christopher Radko ornaments, Ann, Jillian and stylist Eleanor Roper went above and beyond by introducing live Christmas elements, including a grand wreath for the second-floor window outside. On day two, I woke up with the start of a terrible cold, and the incredible Jillian drove 45 minutes to the nearest CVS to fetch much-needed meds, and together, we powered through the project!

Amidst the creative hustle, we found solace in warm nights by the fire at the nearby charming Dancing Bear Lodge. It was delightful to spend time in Nashville for this project with the team in the fog-filled fields of Blackberry Farm in Tennessee.

Lastly, in 2022 we revisited a house we had previously photographed because Traditional Home magazine was eager to feature this home for a festive showcase. Recognizing the challenges of completing this project during the busy holiday season, Carolyn Kendall, the owner of Alcott Interiors, worked her magic and suggested a January shoot.

The homeowners graciously agreed, and Carolyn, her daughter, and the talented Eleanor Roper transformed the space with a new tree and beautifully redecorated surroundings. One charming touch included handmade dried oranges adorning the tree. The talented Eleanor Roper worked her styling magic, adding the perfect finishing touches!

Before heading home from this Nashville project, Kelly and I managed to squeeze in a visit to the Bluebird Cafe, treating ourselves to the joyous sounds of local up-and-coming music—a perfect cherry on top of a heartwarming experience.
